Synopsis
Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) is a Japanese genre mash-up you can watch online on iFILM — director Takashi Miike's full-throttle collision of samurai history and spaghetti western, with a Quentin Tarantino cameo thrown in for good measure.
The setting is a mountain village existing outside any recognisable era — notionally centuries after the 1185 Battle of Dan-no-ura, but dressed entirely as the Old West. Two rival gangs, the white-clad Genji and the red-clad Heike, are tearing the place apart over rumoured buried gold. A nameless gunfighter walks in. Both sides want him. He has other plans. Hideaki Ito, Teruyuki Kagawa and Shun Oguri play it with a straight face that Miike keeps deliberately undermining at every turn.
The whole film is a knowing, high-energy pastiche — the Taira-Minamoto clan war refracted through Leone-style showdowns, with the cast delivering their lines in English. It shouldn't work as well as it does. Stream Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) online on iFILM.
