Synopsis
April and the Extraordinary World (Avril et le monde truqué, 2015) is a steampunk animated feature you can watch online on iFILM, built from the inky, retro-futurist drawings of French comics legend Jacques Tardi.
The year is 1941, but electricity was never invented. Steam, coal and Napoleon V still run a soot-choked France, and the planet's greatest scientists keep vanishing one by one. Among the missing are April's parents, who were chasing a serum for immortality. Left with a talking cat named Darwin and her own half-finished formulas, the teenager races the police across a fog-bound Paris to learn what became of her family.
Marion Cotillard voices April in the original French. Directors Franck Ekinci and Christian Desmares made a rare grown-up cartoon — a teen adventure with a real science-fiction engine under the hood and none of the studio gloss. It took the top feature prize at the Annecy animation festival. Stream April and the Extraordinary World online on iFILM.
