Bandit Queen (1994) — watch online on iFILM. Director Shekhar Kapur reconstructed the life of Phoolan Devi, a lower-caste woman from rural India who was handed to a husband's family before she turned twelve, endured years of brutality, and eventually picked up a gun and became one of the country's most notorious outlaws.
Seema Biswas carries the film with a performance built on exhaustion and cold fury rather than heroic posturing. Kapur works almost like a documentarist — the violence accumulates without aestheticizing. The film sparked controversy before it even opened: Devi, then serving a prison sentence, contested certain scenes, and that tension between her testimony and the filmmakers' choices became part of the picture's complicated legacy. A British-Indian co-production that still ranks among the decade's most unsparing biographical films. Stream Bandit Queen (1994) on iFILM.
