Directed by Beatriz Sheridan, the series follows twin sisters raised worlds apart: kind, impoverished Paulina and conniving, wealthy Paola, who has a devoted husband, Carlos Daniel, played by Fernando Colunga, and no interest in staying faithful to him.

Paola hatches a plan: send Paulina to pose as her for a year while she runs off with her latest lover. Paulina has no good options and agrees. What Paola didn't anticipate is that her husband and his household might actually prefer the woman standing in her place. Gabriela Spanic plays both sisters, and that dual performance is why the show became a phenomenon across Latin America and in Russian-speaking markets throughout the late 1990s.
