Synopsis
Short Sharp Shock (Kurz und schmerzlos, 1998) is Fatih Akin's debut crime drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It follows three childhood friends from Altona, a rough multicultural corner of Hamburg, whose bond starts to crack the moment one of them walks out of prison.
Gabriel, who is Turkish, wants out of the criminal life for good. His Greek friend Costa and Serbian friend Bobby keep working the petty hustles, and Bobby pulls the group toward a local mob boss. The money looks easy. Then a deal turns sour, and the friendship the three of them built since boyhood gets tested in the worst possible way.
Akin directed this at just 24, and his signature is already on screen: Hamburg's immigrant streets, a soundtrack that carries the mood, men you root for even as they wreck their own lives.
