Synopsis
Terra Estrangeira (Foreign Land, 1996) is a Brazilian-Portuguese black-and-white thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas, it follows Paco — a young man who buries his mother in São Paulo and finds himself broke and directionless, with nothing but her lifelong dream: to go back to Lisbon. He takes a job ferrying a violin for a shady contact. That one wrong choice is enough.
In Portugal he runs into Alex, a woman already caught inside the same smuggling ring, and the two try to find a way out together. Shot on grainy black-and-white film with a texture closer to a documentary than a genre thriller, the picture places its two stranded characters against Lisbon's crumbling backstreets.
