Synopsis
The Edge of Heaven (Auf der anderen Seite, 2007) is a German-Turkish drama by Fatih Akin that you can watch online on iFILM. Akin's screenplay took the Best Screenplay prize at Cannes. Six people, two countries, a structure of missed connections — the film is quietly one of the best European dramas of its decade.
An elderly Turkish man in Hamburg takes in a sex worker named Yeter as a live-in companion. His son Nejat, a literature professor, disapproves — until he learns that Yeter sends nearly all her earnings to her daughter Ayten back in Istanbul. When Yeter dies, Nejat travels to Turkey looking for Ayten. But Ayten is a political activist who has already fled to Germany, hiding at the apartment of a young woman named Lotte. Their mothers circle these stories from the edges, carrying their own losses.
Akin divides the film into chapters named for each character and deliberately lets some stories end before others begin. It's less about plot than about proximity — how often we walk past exactly the person we're looking for. Stream The Edge of Heaven on iFILM.
