Synopsis
A Tale of Autumn (Conte d'automne, 1998) is a French romantic drama by Éric Rohmer you can watch online on iFILM, the final chapter of his Tales of the Four Seasons.
Magali is forty-five, a widowed winemaker in the Rhône valley whose grown children have left her with a quiet house. Her old friend Isabelle secretly answers a personal ad on her behalf, even meeting the man — a pleasant fellow named Gérald — before steering him toward Magali. Meanwhile her son's girlfriend, Rosine, plots to introduce her to a former philosophy professor. Both schemes converge at a wedding.
Rohmer builds everything from conversation and small hesitations rather than plot, and lets the vineyards and low autumn light carry as much weight as the dialogue. Béatrice Romand and Marie Rivière make the two friends feel utterly lived-in. It's quiet, perceptive cinema for anyone drawn to the French New Wave and late Rohmer.
