Synopsis
The Third Part of the Night (Trzecia część nocy, 1972) is a Polish war drama soaked in horror that you can watch online on iFILM. It marks the feature debut of Andrzej Żuławski. Michał watches soldiers gun down his mother, his wife and his child — and from that moment the film stops being a story about the war and turns into a waking fever dream.
On the run, Michał reaches out to the resistance but lands instead in a medical institute where people earn their keep by letting lice feed on their blood, the insects bred to produce a typhus serum. There he meets Helena, the spitting image of his murdered wife Marta. He delivers her baby and clings to her as if the past had circled back. Where reality ends and a dying mind's delirium begins, Żuławski deliberately refuses to say.
Witold Sobociński's camera never holds still, and the director wrote the script with his own father, drawing on the family's years under occupation. This is a dense, unsettling watch, not a relaxing night in — but essential for anyone digging through European arthouse and the roots of the later Possession.
