Synopsis
In Darkness (W ciemności, 2011) is a Polish-German war drama directed by Agnieszka Holland — watch online on iFILM. The film reconstructs the real story of Leopold Socha, a sewer worker and small-time thief from Nazi-occupied Lviv who spent fourteen months sheltering a group of Jewish refugees beneath the city streets.
There's no idealism in Socha at the start. He takes their money and keeps quiet — a business arrangement, nothing more. Robert Więckiewicz plays him with a grey moral texture that makes the slow shift in his character credible and unsettling. Benno Fürmann and Agnieszka Grochowska lead the group hiding below; thirteen people navigating flooded tunnels, hunger and each other while roundups sweep the streets above. Holland shoots the underground sequences with barely any light — the darkness is literal, not metaphorical.
Poland submitted the film as its entry for the Academy Award in the foreign-language category that year. What makes it land is the refusal to turn rescue into myth: Socha doesn't become a hero in any clean sense, just a person who kept showing up. Stream In Darkness (2011) online on iFILM.
