Synopsis
Fate of a Man (Sudba cheloveka, 1959) is Sergei Bondarchuk's war drama, available to watch online on iFILM. A truck driver named Andrei Sokolov tells a chance traveling companion what the war took from him — and the one thing it couldn't take.
Before the front, Sokolov had a house, a wife, three children, an ordinary life. Then came the cattle car, a prison camp, an escape, and years of staying alive where staying alive made no sense. Bondarchuk both directs and plays the lead, and he never begs for tears — his Sokolov mostly keeps quiet, which lands harder than any speech could. The hushed final scene with an orphaned boy holds the whole picture together.
This was Bondarchuk's debut behind the camera, drawn from Mikhail Sholokhov's short story. Shot in stark black and white, it grew into one of Soviet cinema's most unsparing statements on what a single person pays for a war. Watch Fate of a Man online on iFILM if you want human drama over battle spectacle — a portrait of a spirit that refused to break.
