Synopsis
When a Woman Ascends the Stairs (1960) is a Japanese drama by Mikio Naruse you can watch online on iFILM. Keiko, a thirty-year-old widow, works as a hostess in a Ginza bar, and every shift begins with that slow climb up the stairs toward the clients.
Everyone calls her Mama. She keeps cheerful around drunks, dresses well to project confidence, and supports a demanding mother and brother on what she earns. The costs keep rising while her youth slips away. Two ways out present themselves: borrow a large sum and open her own bar, or marry a wealthy regular who will keep her. Neither road is clean. Hideko Takamine plays Keiko with quiet, unsparing control, with Tatsuya Nakadai as the manager who loves her in silence and Masayuki Mori among the men around her.
Naruse films the Ginza bar world as a trap where the smile is part of the job and independence costs more than any woman here can pay. It is restrained, precise cinema about the price of dignity, with no melodramatic push. The film ranks among the high points of 1960s Japanese cinema and still introduces viewers to a director the West discovered later than Kurosawa or Ozu.
