Synopsis
An Autumn Afternoon (1962) — watch online on iFILM, the final film by Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu, completed a year before his death. Widower Shuhei Hirayama is a Tokyo salaryman coasting through his sixties on routine: drinks with old colleagues, quiet evenings at home, and a daughter who cooks his meals and has quietly set aside any plans of her own.
A chance encounter with a former teacher — now old, lonely, and clearly forgotten by his grown children — plants a slow-burning discomfort. Hirayama begins to see what his daughter's life will look like if nothing changes. The shift happens in conversations, not confrontations: over sake, over noodles, across low tables.
Ozu shot the whole film on a static camera in restrained Agfacolor, with no dramatic cutting or scoring to push emotion. The result is one of the most quietly precise studies of ageing and parental guilt in cinema — a small film that lands harder than it has any right to.
