The story unfolds across years when the Muslim lands — Syria, northern Mesopotamia, Palestine, Egypt — sit fractured and exposed, threatened from within and by the Crusader states without. The young Saladin pulls these territories together one alliance at a time, talking where he can and drawing his sword where he can't, all of it bending toward a single goal: Jerusalem. The show gives as much room to court intrigue, fragile pacts and betrayal as it does to the battlefield, and to the toll such an ambition takes on the man carrying it.
