Synopsis

Failed actor Chance Wayne drifts back to his small Florida hometown with Alexandra Del Lago, a fading movie star he means to use as his ticket into the movies. Waiting for him are Heavenly, the girl he once loved, and her father — a ruthless local political boss who ran him out of town years ago. Paul Newman plays a charmer whose looks are already slipping; Geraldine Page is the diva clawing to stay relevant.
Brooks softened the play's ending to clear 1962 censors, but Williams' venom survives: vanity, squandered youth, small-town cruelty. Ed Begley walked off with the Best Supporting Actor Oscar as the bullying politician, while Page and Shirley Knight both landed nominations.
