About

Synopsis

Elegy (2008) is a drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Isabel Coixet and adapted from Philip Roth's novel The Dying Animal. Ben Kingsley and Penélope Cruz lead a cast that also includes Patricia Clarkson and Dennis Hopper. One hundred twelve minutes, shot in the US.

David Kepesh is a cultural critic and professor who has spent decades arranging his life around personal freedom — no commitments, no entanglements. Then Consuela Castillo walks into his course. She's young, Cuban-American, from a Catholic family, and completely unimpressed by his credentials. The affair that follows quietly dismantles everything Kepesh thought he had settled about himself. He becomes possessive. He waits by the phone. His old poet friend (Hopper) watches with knowing sympathy; his long-term companion Carolyn (Clarkson) sees through him without even trying.

Coixet takes Roth's unsentimental source material and films it without softening or judging the central character. Kingsley plays Kepesh as a man who built an entire philosophy around avoiding exactly this kind of pain — and arrived at it anyway. Cruz is not just a foil; she carries her own weight throughout. A quiet, sharp film about age, desire and the cost of staying emotionally safe. Stream Elegy (2008) online on iFILM.
