Synopsis
Claude Chabrol's Madame Bovary (1991) is available to watch online on iFILM, with Isabelle Huppert carrying Flaubert's restless heroine.
Emma marries Charles, a mild country doctor, and the quiet rhythm of their Normandy town starts to suffocate her almost at once. She chases the passion she read about in novels — first with the young clerk Léon, then with the smooth landowner Rodolphe — and pays for it in gowns, debts and borrowed time. The lovers drift off, the bills pile up, the dream curdles. Huppert plays Emma cold and exact, neither pitying her nor letting her off the hook.
Chabrol stays unusually faithful to the book, narration and all, yet what he delivers is no costume-drama postcard but a clinical study of how boredom and vanity grind a person down. The film runs 143 minutes of measured light and 19th-century interiors. It landed among the year's best-regarded French releases. If you like slow psychological cinema where a glance does the work of a monologue, set the evening aside. Stream Madame Bovary (1991) online on iFILM.
