Synopsis
Story of Women (Une affaire de femmes, 1988) is a French historical drama by Claude Chabrol you can watch online on iFILM. Occupied France, 1942. Marie Latour is raising two children on almost nothing while her husband recovers from a wound he brought back from the front. To get by, she starts performing clandestine abortions and takes in a prostitute as a tenant — quietly assembling a life the regime has not approved.
Money follows, and so does a young lover. Her husband becomes an awkward presence she can no longer accommodate. Isabelle Huppert plays Marie without a single concession to sympathy or condemnation: a woman doing what she has to in order to survive, until the Vichy state decides to make her a public lesson. François Cluzet plays the injured, sidelined husband she has already left behind in everything but name.
Chabrol built the script from the real case of Marie-Louise Giraud — put to death by guillotine in July 1943, the last woman France executed this way. Huppert took the Best Actress prize at Venice that year. The film doesn't argue a position; it follows a woman through the logic of necessity until necessity runs out.
