Synopsis
From the Land of the Moon (Mal de pierres, 2016), directed by Nicole Garcia, is a French drama you can watch online on iFILM. Postwar southern France: Gabrielle is a young woman whose hunger for real love is so intense her family treats it as a disorder. They marry her off to a decent man. Quiet life. Proper arrangement. She's miserable from the first week.
Marion Cotillard plays Gabrielle at full pitch — restless, luminous, convinced she is owed something the world keeps withholding. At a mountain sanatorium where she's sent to recover, she meets André, an Indochinese War veteran played by Louis Garrel. He is withdrawn, damaged, barely present. Gabrielle falls completely. The film holds open the question of whether what she feels is love or an elaborate story she has built around a man who may not even exist in the way she's imagined him.
Garcia frames the story as a slow excavation — memory circling back, details shifting. Cotillard keeps it from tipping into melodrama by playing every certainty as fragile. Stream From the Land of the Moon (2016) online on iFILM.
