Synopsis

37 Seconds (2019) is a Japanese drama from director HIKARI you can watch online on iFILM. Yuma is twenty-three, gifted at drawing manga, and living with cerebral palsy — but someone else's name sits on the covers. A popular online star publishes Yuma's work as her own, while an overprotective mother keeps her daughter tethered to home.

Determined to earn on her own terms, Yuma carries her drawings to an adult comics magazine, where an editor tells her bluntly that to write about intimacy she has to live it first. That awkward push sets off a quiet rebellion: discovering her own body, her desire, the city after dark, and people her mother spent a lifetime keeping at arm's length. The title refers to the thirty-seven seconds Yuma went without breathing at birth — the sliver of time that set her life on a different course.

The lead is played by Mei Kayama, a first-time actress who has cerebral palsy herself, and her presence strips the film of any trace of pity. HIKARI's feature debut took the Audience Award and the Panorama prize at the 2019 Berlinale. It's gentle, grown-up and unsentimental — about the right to an independent, physical, imperfect life.
