Synopsis

Otello Celetti is unemployed and going nowhere until a lucky coincidence lands him a job as a motorcycle traffic officer. The uniform changes him. He takes to the whistle, the authority to wave cars over, and the sheer power of the job with an enthusiasm that unsettles everyone around him. Then a broken-down car on his stretch of road turns out to belong to actress Sylva Koscina, and Otello's grand plans take an unexpected turn.
Sordi made a career out of men like Otello — ordinary guys derailed by small ambitions — and this is one of his best. A dry, affectionate comedy that says something about Italy in 1960 without ever announcing that it does. Stream Il vigile (1960) online on iFILM.
