Hugo's men killed Gagin's friend. Gagin wants money more than justice — a distinction that makes him unreliable as a hero and harder to dismiss than a straight avenger. An FBI agent offers a deal he doesn't want. A young local woman named Pila decides he's worth protecting. On the town square, a wooden carousel with a pink horse turns all night while the crowd burns an effigy. Montgomery stripped the noir formula of its usual urban setting and found something more unsettling: an alien ritual, a crowd with no stake in the plot, and a man whose plan cannot survive morning light.
