Synopsis
Panique (1947) is Julien Duvivier's French noir, ready to watch online on iFILM. A woman is found murdered in a quiet Paris suburb, and suspicion lands almost instantly on Monsieur Hire, the standoffish oddball the whole neighborhood has long resented.
Hire is genuinely strange: he keeps to himself, spies on others, and answers warmth with contempt. Yet he is not the killer. The real culprit cleverly steers the crowd toward the inconvenient neighbor, while Hire loses his head over Alice, a pretty newcomer who turns out to be anything but on his side. Michel Simon plays the hunted loner so well that pity and distaste sit in the viewer at the same time.
Adapted from Georges Simenon's novel about Monsieur Hire, the film grows from an intimate story into a sharp portrait of a mob eager to tear a stranger apart over a single rumor. Cramped courtyards, deep black-and-white shadows and a rising witch hunt mark it as late French poetic realism. A treat for fans of classic noir and Simenon. Stream Panique online on iFILM.
