Synopsis
The Glass Key (1942) is a vintage film noir you can watch online on iFILM, adapted from Dashiell Hammett's hard-boiled novel. Political fixer Paul Madvig drops his gangster ties to back a respectable reform candidate just before an election. Then the candidate's son turns up dead, and the suspicion lands squarely on Madvig.
Cleaning up the mess falls to his loyal right-hand man, Ed Beaumont — a gambler with a cool head who stays faithful to his boss without quite believing he's innocent. The deeper Ed digs, the more he becomes a target himself, with the mob willing to beat the truth out of him. Brian Donlevy, Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake headline, but it's William Bendix as the grinning thug Jeff who steals it; his brutal working-over of Ladd remains some of the roughest violence in early noir.
Director Stuart Heisler keeps the crime drama tight and shadowed, where betrayal hides behind every handshake and the ending turns on loyalty rather than law. This is Hammett rendered meaner and sharper than many louder noirs of the period. Stream The Glass Key (1942) online on iFILM.
