Synopsis
Tom of Finland (2017) is Dome Karukoski's biographical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It follows Touko Laaksonen, the Finnish artist whose frank drawings of muscular men traveled the globe under the pen name Tom of Finland.
The story picks up where the war left Touko: a decorated officer comes back to Helsinki, where simply being himself still puts him in danger. Pekka Strang plays him quietly, almost wordlessly — a man sketching in private the things no one dared say aloud. Love has to stay hidden, the drawings even more so, and the pressure to settle into a wife and children never lets up. Paper becomes his escape: bold, swaggering figures where shame gives way to freedom.
From there the film carries Laaksonen to California, to recognition, and to a generation that turned his work into a banner. Karukoski skips the museum-tour reverence and tells instead how one man's private obsession tipped into a public shift. What stays with you isn't the shock of the art but the artist's quiet stubbornness. One for anyone who likes their biopics honest and unvarnished. Stream Tom of Finland (2017) online on iFILM.
