Synopsis
The Happy Prince (2018) is a drama you can watch online on iFILM — written, directed by, and starring Rupert Everett as Oscar Wilde in the years after Reading Gaol. Everett spent two decades getting this film made, pulling together financing across the UK, Germany, Belgium and Italy to tell the story he couldn't let go of.
Paris and the Riviera, 1897 to 1900. Wilde is broke, ill, and can't stop himself from running back to Lord Alfred Douglas — Colin Morgan plays Bosie with a charm that makes you understand the pull even as the damage piles up. Edwin Thomas is the steadfast Robbie Ross watching it all, while Colin Firth and Emily Watson fill out key supporting roles with quiet precision.
What Everett refuses to do is make Wilde into a marble statue. This is a man laughing at his own ruin, dragging young men to cafes on borrowed money, cracking a perfect line from a sickbed. That unsentimental honesty is what separates it from the usual literary biopic. Stream The Happy Prince online on iFILM.
