Dead Birds

Dead Birds (2005), directed by Alex Turner, is a horror western you can watch online on iFILM. Near the end of the Civil War, a band of Confederate soldiers robs a bank and needs somewhere to wait out the heat. They pick an abandoned plantation in Alabama. It is the wrong choice.

Henry Thomas, Michael Shannon, and Isaiah Washington play men who know how to handle violence but have nothing in their toolkit for what the house holds. The film takes its time — which works in its favour. The dread builds before anything is explained, and by the time the supernatural forces show their hand, there is no clean way out for anyone. It sits in an underexplored corner of the genre where the frontier West meets the genuinely uncanny, and it commits to that setting without winking at the audience.
