Memoirs of a Murderer

"Memoirs of a Murderer" (2017) is a Japanese crime thriller directed by Yu Irie, available to watch online on iFILM. In 1995, a serial killer strangled five victims, taunted the investigation, and disappeared. Detective Makimura lost his mentor and spent the next two decades waiting.

Once the statute of limitations runs out, a man named Sonezaki publishes a tell-all book — "I Am the Murderer" — and goes on a media tour. The book sells out on day one. Tatsuya Fujiwara plays Sonezaki with an unsettling, almost cheerful ease, and the film's tension lives entirely in that gap: the man cannot be charged, but Makimura is not finished.
