Synopsis
Dark Blue Almost Black (2006) is a Spanish drama you can watch online on iFILM, the debut feature of writer-director Daniel Sánchez Arévalo. The dark-blue, almost-black jacket in a shop window is what Jorge wants — and can't afford.
Jorge is stuck. For seven years he's cared for his paralyzed father, worked as a building janitor and studied by correspondence, desperate to climb out of his neighborhood. Then his brother gets out of prison with an outrageous favor to ask, an old flame walks back in, and his closest friend stumbles onto a secret about his own father, and about himself. Quim Gutiérrez, Antonio de la Torre and Raúl Arévalo tie a knot of borrowed secrets that's about to pull tight.
Arévalo's first feature took home several Goya Awards, including Best New Director, and still reads as one of Spanish cinema's most clear-eyed films about how hard it is to trade an "almost black" life for something lighter.
