Synopsis
The Scent of the Night (L'odore della notte, 1998) is an Italian crime drama by Claudio Caligari, available to watch online on iFILM. Rome in the 1970s. A man who used to carry a badge decides the badge was the wrong side of the equation, and turns to robbing the kind of wealthy residents who cannot exactly file a police report — because their money was never clean to begin with.
Valerio Mastandrea and Marco Giallini anchor a film that has no interest in making crime look good. Caligari shoots with a near-documentary plainness: the apartments are ordinary, the schemes are squalid, and the descent is gradual enough that each step down feels almost reasonable. What makes the film stand out in Italian genre cinema is that Caligari keeps the focus on the psychology of the choice — not the heist, not the chase — just the slow logic of a man who convinced himself this was simpler.
