Synopsis
The History of Sound (2025) is Oliver Hermanus' romantic drama, and you can watch online on iFILM. Two music students meet in 1917 Boston and, years later, set out to record folk songs across the backwaters of Maine.
Lionel arrives from rural Kentucky with a rare ear and a quiet voice. David, a conservatory student, is the first to hear what he can do. The war pulls them apart, and when it's over they pick up a phonograph and a box of wax cylinders, walking farm to farm for ballads that would otherwise vanish with the people who still remember them. Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor keep everything in half-tones — the real feeling lives in a glance, not a line. Chris Cooper turns up as the older Lionel, looking back.
Ben Shattuck adapted the screenplay from his own short story, and the film premiered in competition at Cannes. It's slow and autumnal, a study of memory and how a recorded sound can hold a vanished moment. Made for anyone who loved the hush of Call Me by Your Name.
