Synopsis
The Business of Drugs (2020), Season 1 — watch all 6 documentary episodes online on iFILM. Former CIA analyst Amaryllis Fox approaches the drug trade as exactly that: a trade, with supply chains, market dynamics, and profit margins that dwarf most legal industries.
Each episode follows one substance. Fox traces cocaine from Andean farms through smuggling networks to street-level sales, then maps the synthetic MDMA market into the legal grey zones that make it unpredictable and deadly. She flies to Kenya to walk one of the world's newest heroin corridors, then moves to Myanmar — Southeast Asia's ground zero for methamphetamine production. California's cannabis legalization did not kill the black market; roughly 80 percent of in-state sales still bypass the legal system entirely. The season closes on opioids, where oxycodone's origins inside the pharmaceutical industry make the scale of destruction harder to separate from corporate decisions.
What separates this series from standard drug documentaries is Fox's approach: she interviews farmers, traffickers, recovering addicts, and policy researchers with the same open curiosity, no prosecutorial edge. Stream The Business of Drugs Season 1 online on iFILM.
