I Dream in Another Language

I Dream in Another Language (Sueño en otro idioma, 2017) is a Mexican drama with a touch of the fantastical from director Ernesto Contreras, and you can watch online on iFILM. Its starting point is a dying indigenous tongue with only two living speakers left.

The catch: those two men fell out half a century ago and haven't traded a word since. Martín, a young linguist played by Fernando Álvarez Rebeil, travels into the rainforest to record the language before it vanishes with its last keepers. To do that, he first has to coax two stubborn old friends back into talking — and the grudge between them hides something far more intimate than he bargained for. Eligio Meléndez and José Manuel Poncelis play the aging speakers.

Contreras laces the grounded story with a soft strain of magic, treating the language itself like a spell only the birds and the forest still understand. It's a warm, mournful film about memory and what dies with the final word. The movie won the World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award at Sundance.
