Ceasefire

Ceasefire (Cessez-le-feu, 2017) is a French-Belgian drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Emmanuel Courcol, it follows Georges Laffont — played by Romain Duris — a Great War survivor who cannot make peace with ordinary life. His solution, in the early 1920s, is to disappear into West Africa.

The vastness of Upper Volta offers no cure. Laffont drifts, recruits villagers for plantation labor in Ghana alongside a fellow veteran-turned-artist named Diofo, then turns back toward France — toward a disabled brother, an aging mother, and wounds that travel time doesn't close. Courcol's film is quiet in a way that demands attention: Duris barely speaks, but the damage reads in every scene. A study of a generation that came home without ever really leaving.
