Synopsis
An Eye for Beauty (Le Règne de la beauté, 2014) is a Canadian drama by Denys Arcand, available to watch online on iFILM. Luc, a young architect, lives a calm and elegant life with his wife Stéphanie in a lakeside house — until a symposium in Toronto puts a woman in his path and the quiet starts to come apart.
Luc (Éric Bruneau) is gifted, comfortable and surrounded by flawless things: furniture, landscapes, people. Arcand shoots his world like a showroom — smooth, perfectly arranged, and for that reason hollow. The brief affair with Lindsay is less passion than a crack that suddenly exposes both the marriage and the man's own listlessness. Mélanie Thierry and Marie-Josée Croze play the two women between whom Luc can never quite bring himself to choose.
Arcand, who took the Oscar for The Barbarian Invasions, comes back to his lifelong subject: well-off people who can't manage to be happy. The film is cold and lovely, like glass walls above the water. It suits viewers who like unhurried art-house cinema about the emptiness behind a polished surface.
