Retired judge Justin Playfair (Scott) is convinced he is Sherlock Holmes. His brother, eyeing the inheritance, brings in psychiatrist Dr. Mildred Watson — a name Justin takes as destiny. She arrives to certify him and ends up on a manhunt for Moriarty through the streets of New York. The film hangs on a question it never fully answers: is Justin deluded, or just the only person willing to believe in something larger than ordinary life? Scott plays it completely straight, which makes it funnier and stranger than it has any right to be.
