Synopsis
Max and the Junkmen (1971) — watch online on iFILM the French crime drama by Claude Sautet, with Michel Piccoli and Romy Schneider. Max is a former magistrate now working as a Paris detective with one quiet obsession: catching a criminal in the act, not after the fact. His colleagues find it eccentric. He doesn't care.
A chance run-in with old acquaintance Abel — a Foreign Legion veteran now stealing scrap metal with a small crew — hands Max exactly the opening he needs. He engineers the whole thing himself: push the gang toward a bank robbery, then arrest them in the middle of it. Airtight. What he doesn't account for is Lily (Romy Schneider), a street prostitute on the fringes of the gang, and the feeling she stirs in him that has no place inside any police operation.
Sautet built a film about obsession eating away at judgment — not a thriller about catching criminals. The distinction runs through every scene. Piccoli plays Max with a chill that reads as menace; Schneider brings a warmth that makes the ending land hard. Stream Max and the Junkmen (1971) online on iFILM.
