Synopsis
The Reef (2010) is an Australian horror thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Andrew Traucki and loosely based on a real shark attack off the Queensland coast. Unlike most creature features, it was shot in open water with actual great whites — no cages, no studio tank.
A sailing trip goes wrong when the hull cracks and the boat rolls. Four of the five survivors decide to swim for a distant island rather than wait on the upturned hull. What follows is a slow, patient hunt. The shark does not circle dramatically — it simply appears, disappears, and appears again closer than before. Damian Walshe-Howling and Zoe Naylor carry the physical dread of two people who know they cannot outswim what is below them.
Traucki keeps the camera at water level throughout, cutting away at the worst moments rather than showing everything. That restraint is what makes The Reef genuinely unsettling rather than gory. Stream it in good quality on iFILM.
