Synopsis
The Housemaid (하녀, 2010) is a South Korean drama-thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Im Sang-soo. Selected for the main competition at Cannes 2010, the film reworks the influential 1960 Korean horror of the same name, lifting the story out of its original domestic claustrophobia and into the cold luxury of a nouveau-riche estate.
Eun-yi takes a job as a live-in maid. The master of the house — wealthy, casually predatory — makes his interest clear early on, and what follows is not seduction so much as a demonstration of how power operates when money insulates you from consequences. Jeon Do-yeon plays Eun-yi's slow shift from compliance to something else entirely. Once the household's matriarchs — the wife and her formidable mother-in-law, played with icy precision by Youn Yuh-jung — close ranks, the film turns into a different kind of thriller.
Im Sang-soo frames the whole thing as a controlled provocation: beautiful surfaces, steady camera, and underneath it a story about who gets to set the terms. The ending is theatrical and deliberate. Stream The Housemaid (2010) online on iFILM.
