Faust

Faust (Lekce Faust, 1994) is a Czech fantasy film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by surrealist Jan Švankmajer. The setup is deliberately flat: a Prague man follows a strange map, finds an abandoned attic with a puppet theatre and a copy of Goethe. He puts on the Faust costume. Then it stops being a game.

Švankmajer draws from Marlowe, Goethe and Central European puppet tradition at once, stitching live action, clay animation and giant marionettes into something that refuses easy categorization. Petr Čepek plays the unnamed protagonist with a sleepwalker's passivity — and that flat affect is precisely what makes the film unsettling. Damnation arrives not through grand operatic choices but through small, avoidable steps taken by a man who simply wasn't paying attention. A Czech-German-French-British co-production.
