Synopsis
The Real Blonde (1998), directed by Tom DiCillo, is a dry comedy about ambition and New York pretension you can watch online on iFILM. Matthew Modine plays Joe, a waiter clinging to dreams of an acting career, while his girlfriend Mary (Catherine Keener) keeps their life afloat doing makeup for fashion shoots.
His best friend Bob lands a soap opera role and immediately fixates on finding a "real" blonde — naturally blonde, not chemically assisted. DiCillo uses this running joke to build a sharply observed portrait of the Manhattan creative scene: auditions, ad shoots, a blink-and-you'll-miss-it Madonna video cameo, and two people quietly unsure they're living the right life. Steve Buscemi, Denis Leary, Christopher Lloyd, Kathleen Turner and Dave Chappelle pass through in supporting roles.
The film is smarter than its premise suggests — it lets the comedy breathe and trusts its characters to be more complicated than their obsessions. Watch The Real Blonde (1998) online on iFILM.
