Alone in the Wilderness
One man's 32-year Alaskan experience in the cabin he built by hand.
Synopsis
Alone in the Wilderness (2004) is a documentary you can watch online on iFILM — shot entirely from footage Dick Proenneke filmed himself after walking into the Alaskan backcountry at age 50 to build a log cabin from scratch. No power tools. No help. No neighbors for miles.
Proenneke spent 32 years at Twin Lakes, in what is now Lake Clark National Park, and he kept the camera running through all of it: felling timber, smoking fish, tracking moose, writing in his journal through the long winters. Directors Bob Swerer Sr. and Jr. cut the film from that personal archive. Quiet and unhurried, it's a record of a man who decided solitude was worth building toward.
