Synopsis
Hana & Alice (2004) is a Japanese coming-of-age dramedy you can watch online on iFILM. Director Shunji Iwai follows two schoolgirl best friends who fall for the same boy, turning a small lie into a tangle nobody planned for.
One day Hana watches the boy she likes walk straight into a wall and knock himself out. When he comes to, he's dazed — so she seizes the moment, convincing him he has amnesia and that she is his girlfriend. To keep the story straight she has to pull her best friend Alice into the act, and from there the truth grows harder and harder to untangle.
Anne Suzuki and Yu Aoi play the two friends whose bond outweighs any crush, and the film became Aoi's breakout. Iwai shoots it tenderly, with his trademark soft light and long, unhurried pauses. It's a calm picture about first love and growing up that never rushes you along. Stream Hana & Alice (2004) online on iFILM.
