Synopsis
Femmes Fatales (Calmos, 1976) is a barbed French comedy from Bertrand Blier, and you can watch it online in good quality. Two fortyish Parisians — gynecologist Paul and his new soulmate Albert — are worn down by their demanding wives and decide to walk away from everything at once.
The runaways settle in a backwater village, dreaming of quiet, wine and a cigar with no woman in sight. There a rowdy, hard-drinking priest named Émile takes them in and reintroduces them to life's small pleasures. Peace never comes, though: word of the two deserters spreads, thousands of fed-up husbands follow their lead, and the scorned women mount a counterattack. Jean-Pierre Marielle and Jean Rochefort lead, alongside Brigitte Fossey, Bernard Blier and a very young Gérard Jugnot.
Blier built a brazen satire on the war between the sexes, and the finale tips into a surrealism wild enough to scandalize audiences back in 1976. This one isn't for viewers chasing good taste, but fans of French absurdity and cruel wit will admire the nerve of it. Stream Femmes Fatales (Calmos, 1976) online on iFILM.
