Synopsis
1898: Our Last Men in the Philippines (2016) is a Spanish war drama by Salvador Calvo, available to watch online on iFILM. In July of that year, around fifty soldiers of the Spanish garrison reach the coastal village of Baler to fortify a small outpost. The war against the United States and Filipino insurgents is already lost. The men in Baler don't know it yet.
They barricade themselves inside the local church and hold out for eleven months. Spain signed the Treaty of Paris in December 1898, ceding the Philippines to the United States. The Baler garrison kept fighting until June 1899 — not out of delusion, but because no word ever reached them. The cast includes Luis Tosar, Javier Gutiérrez, Karra Elejalde, and a young Miguel Herrán.
What Calvo made is not a film about heroism. It is a film about the machinery of empire abandoning the people it sent to die for it. Stream 1898: Our Last Men in the Philippines (2016) online on iFILM.
