Maurice Grosse, a Society for Psychical Research investigator, shows up at a north London council house where a single mother and her kids are reporting things they can't explain. He brings in fellow researcher Guy Lyon Playfair, and the two approach the case from opposite ends. The focal point is Janet, a teenage girl — and the closer they look, the less the two men can agree on what they're witnessing. When Guy calls in a medium over Maurice's objections, the rift between them widens.
