Synopsis
Bastards (Les Salauds, 2013) is Claire Denis' icy neo-noir, available to watch online on iFILM. Supertanker captain Marco Silvestri leaves his ship and comes back to Paris after his brother-in-law's suicide: the family business is in ruins, and his young niece has ended up in a psychiatric ward.
His sister Sandra blames the wealthy financier Édouard Laporte. Marco rents an apartment in Laporte's building and works his way toward the man through Raphaëlle, Laporte's mistress. The deeper he digs, the murkier it gets — the family's collapse runs on more than one man's cruelty, and Sandra's own secrets quietly poison his revenge. Vincent Lindon plays Marco with a clenched, near-silent fury; Chiara Mastroianni is Raphaëlle.
Denis works slow and merciless: Agnès Godard's smeared night photography, a queasy Tindersticks score in place of exposition, and an ending that lands without warning.
