The story is set in Vík, a small town in the shadow of the subglacial volcano Katla, a year into its eruption. Then people start emerging from the glacier — covered in ash, confused, and carrying the faces of those who vanished or died long ago. They are not ghosts. They are not exactly themselves either. The town has no framework for what they are. Families are torn between clinging to the returnees and accepting that something is deeply wrong.
