Synopsis
My Sweet Little Village (Vesničko má středisková, 1985) is a Czechoslovak comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Jiří Menzel from a script by Zdeněk Svěrák. The film picked up an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
Otík is a kind, hopelessly clumsy young man who works as assistant truck driver alongside his practical, exasperated neighbor Pávek. Pávek's family looks after Otík; the whole village does, in the way tight-knit communities sometimes do — with eye-rolls and genuine care in equal measure. When a local functionary schemes to shift Otík out of his large inherited house by sending him to Prague on a fabricated work assignment, the village's collective decency quietly organizes itself.
Menzel built his career on comedy rooted in everyday warmth — Closely Watched Trains being the most famous example — and this film sits comfortably in that lineage. Svěrák's script gives it a rhythm that never tips into sentiment. Genuinely funny and kind at the same time, which is rarer than it sounds. Watch My Sweet Little Village (1985) online on iFILM.
