Synopsis
Man from Deep River (Il paese del sesso selvaggio, 1972) is Umberto Lenzi's Italian adventure-horror film, available to watch online on iFILM. A photographer working in Thailand kills a man in a senseless accident and flees into the jungle, where a primitive tribe takes him captive. First a slave, then claimed as the chief's daughter's servant, he survives only by enduring a series of brutal initiation rites.
Over months the outsider becomes one of them — he marries the chief's daughter and joins the tribe's war against a savage cannibal clan next door. Ivan Rassimov and Me Me Lai lead, a pairing that would return to this subgenre more than once. The film matters more for what it started than for what it is: Lenzi launched the Italian cannibal cycle here, paving the road to the notorious Cannibal Holocaust. It's harsh, at times near unwatchable, and infamous for genuine animal cruelty — not a casual watch, but a key text for anyone studying the history of extreme cinema.
